Lo Morant Park environmental trail

Lo Morant Park is located in the northern part of the city of Alicante on the grounds of an old estate from which it takes its name. Preceded by the article (lo), which is characteristic of rural Valencian toponymy and suggests the origin of an old possession structure. For the construction and implementation of this park, Alicante City Council's own resources were used and the participation of the neighbourhood was taken into account. After the work carried out by the Municipal Brigades, Lo Morant was inaugurated on 10 May 1987, being one of the largest parks in the city and having a flat surface area of twelve hectares, which meant a green lung and a union for the surrounding neighbourhoods. The Park comprises different spaces connected by its interior paths. Thus, the paved promenade that encircles it, makes it possible to walk more than a kilometre with the freshness of the poplars (Populus alba), giving way to a representative landscaped area between paths flanked by cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens), groups of araucarias (Araucaria excelsa), date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) and Mexican fan palms (Washingtonia robusta). There is an area of woodland with picnic furniture in which the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) predominates, joined by the tipuana (Tipuana tipu), providing a shield from urban noise and shade all year round. In the north-western part of the Park there is a stepped rockery with aromatic plants and succulents, with the singularity of an agavaceous plant such as the dragon tree (Dracaena draco). Nearby is the speciality garden, with a group of thorny flowering shrubs, the main representatives of the rose family, in the semicircular frame of the pond. As a whole, the Morant Park is complemented by a series of leisure, cultural and sports areas, while offering a sample of garden flora, providing (in situ) knowledge of some of the types of plants used in Mediterranean gardening.
